Phones Down, Eyes Up: Why Undistracted Time Matters More Than Ever

Written by Informed Families | September 7, 2025 at 1:59 PM

Let’s be real—putting our phones down is hard. Notifications buzz, emails pile up, and the scroll is endless. But while we’re glued to screens, our kids are watching. They notice when our attention is split between them and a device. They also notice when we choose them over the phone.

In today’s world, constant connectivity is normal—but so is feeling disconnected from the people right in front of us. Family meals, car rides, and even a few minutes before bed are golden opportunities for connection. The question is: are we fully present?

Why It Matters

Research shows that children who feel seen and heard at home are more resilient, confident, and less likely to engage in risky behaviors. But connection doesn’t happen automatically—it takes intention. When we silence phones and focus on one another, even for a short time, it sends a powerful message: you matter most right now.

Try This at Home

  • Make Meals Sacred: No phones at the table. Use mealtime to ask simple questions like, “What was the best part of your day?” or “What was tough today?”

  • Set a Daily “No-Phone Zone”: Whether it’s the dinner table, the living room, or during a short family walk, pick one time each day to unplug.

  • Lead by Example: Kids learn what they live. When they see you put your phone aside, they’re more likely to follow.

The Big Picture

We don’t need to go completely tech-free to make an impact. Small, device-free windows of time add up to big deposits in family connection. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being present.

This September, as we celebrate Family Day on September 22, let’s commit to a little more “phones down, eyes up” time. Because in the long run, those moments of undistracted connection will mean more to our kids than any text, post, or notification ever could.
