The Surprising Benefits of Chores

Posted by Informed Families on May 24, 2021 at 5:44 PM

What does it mean to be part of a family? Besides the bonds of love and—typically—genetics, it can also mean contributing in an age-appropriate way to the success of the social unit. Further, it’s about fostering success for each member of the group.

One of the topics in this month’s Family Table Time activity kit deals with the subject of family. Another topic explores what it means to sacrifice for the greater good. A third topic addresses accomplishments.

One activity that embraces all these topics is giving children chores to perform at an early age. Researchers say such responsibility helps them build a lasting sense of mastery, responsibility, and self-reliance. Chores can also provide a sense of accomplishment and competence.

Later success

One Harvard study found that doing chores helps kids feel like they’re part of a team, and in turn teaches them how cooperation and hard work can lead to the success of the larger group. And a 20-year-long study at the University of Minnesota found that the best predictor of adult success was whether children had begun doing chores as young as age three or four.

An article in Psychology Today put it this way:

“All children have the desire to be competent, effective, and to master tasks they previously could not accomplish. The acquisition and demonstration of new skills help foster positive self-esteem. When they succeed in mastering more responsibilities, they not only feel they can do what adults or older siblings do, but earn respect and validation for their competence.”

How to start

If children haven’t assigned chores, it’s important to talk to them about their roles and responsibilities in the family. Discuss how learning to do chores can prepare them for success in school and work when they’re grown up.

Remember, it’s never too young to start. Even preschoolers can pick up their toys and books, put their dirty clothes in the hamper, and put food and water in pets’ bowls.
