Goldsboro Elementary Magnet School in Sanford, Florida struck gold when they recruited Wing Isom to join the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) over seven years ago. Now, Isom serves as the school’s PTA President and more recently, she has taken on a new role: Informed Families Ambassador.

Calling Isom “an involved parent” is a vast understatement – and calling her an average Informed Families Ambassador would be equally incorrect. Since the fall of 2015, in her short time as an Informed Families Ambassador, Isom has delivered all three Informed Families campaigns (Family Day™, Red Ribbon Week®, and Lock Your Meds®) with great thought, energy and enthusiasm to the children and families at Goldsboro Elementary.

“We all talk about issues facing our children, but I love doing something about them,” said Wing. “As an Informed Families Ambassador, I connect parents at our school with wonderful prevention resources and I try to do it in a way that works best for our particular school.”

Wing learned about the Ambassador Program at a training co-sponsored by the Seminole County Prevention Coalition. From morning announcement messages and parent pledges to school newsletter entries and decorations, Isom strategically delivered each campaign to the students and parents, integrating her knowledge of the school environment and the best methods for reaching her audience.

No stranger to hard work, Wing is a full time employee at a JP Morgan Chase call center, where she works the night shift 7pm to 6am, four days a week.

“I enjoy my work and I appreciate that because of my shift, I can take the kids to school and volunteer in the morning for the PTA,” said Isom.

Clearly, nothing can get in the way of Isom’s dedication to the children in her community. In fact, she was recognized last year for volunteering 1,000 hours for the PTA. Unwilling to rest on her laurels, Isom was quick to point out that she wishes she could do more and already has bigger and better plans for school-wide prevention during the 2016-2017 school year.

“I think the Ambassador Program is wonderful and the people are really helpful and friendly,” said Wing. “Whenever I have questions, Christine Stilwell is a lifesaver. All of the print materials and online resources are awesome. I’ve learned so much, not just as an ambassador, but as a parent. I feel by participating, I am making this world a better place.”

Informed Families is very grateful to Isom for her time, energy and dedication to being a child advocate through the Goldsboro Elementary PTA and the Informed Families Ambassador Program. We look forward to continuing to work together to helping kids grow up safe, healthy and drug free for years to come.
