☀️ The Summer Prevention Plan: Keeping Kids Safe, Connected, and Substance-Free

Posted by Informed Families on May 16, 2025 at 1:49 PM

Summer is around the corner — and while it’s a time for fun and freedom, it can also bring new challenges for parents. With more free time and less structure, kids are at a higher risk of engaging in risky behaviors. That’s why Informed Families created a proactive Summer Prevention Plan to help families stay connected, engaged, and substance-free all season long. From fun activities to clear safety tips, we’ve got everything you need to make this summer safe and memorable.

1. Establish Clear Expectations

Summer's relaxed atmosphere can lead to inconsistent rules. Informed Families emphasizes the importance of being Firm—clearly stating expectations and consequences, and adhering to them consistently. This approach helps children understand boundaries and builds trust.

2. Prioritize Family Time

Quality family interactions are pivotal in preventing risky behaviors. Engaging in activities like family dinners, game nights, or outdoor projects fosters connection and open communication. Informed Families' Family Activity Kit provides tools to facilitate these interactions, promoting healthy habits and traditions.

3. Educate About Substance Misuse

Summer can present increased opportunities for substance exposure. Informed Families advises parents to create an open, non-judgmental environment where children feel comfortable discussing concerns. Using age-appropriate language and concrete examples can help convey the seriousness of substance misuse.

4. Engage in Safe, Fun Activities

Keeping children occupied with positive activities reduces the likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors. Ideas include.

  • Washing the family car
  • Drawing sidewalk mural
  • Bike Rides
  • Family Walks
  • Family Outings (parks, aquariums, farmers markets, etc.)
  • Gardening
  • Organizing donation drives
  • Cooking meals together
  • Hosting backyard picnics
  • Themed Dinner Parties
  • Supervised get togethers with friends

These activities not only entertain but also strengthen family bonds.

5. Implement Safety Measures

Physical safety is as crucial as emotional well-being. Ensure children stay hydrated, especially during outdoor activities, by enforcing regular drink breaks. Additionally, initiatives like Safe Homes, Smart Parties encourage parents to create environments free from drugs, alcohol, and tobacco during gatherings.

By integrating these strategies, families can create a summer environment that is both enjoyable and protective against potential risks. For more resources and information, visit Informed Families.
