Family Day is an awareness campaign, created by CASA Columbia, about the importance of regular family meals as a way to prevent drug and alcohol abuse and other risky behaviors among children.

How can you keep everyone engaged in conversation at family meals? Use open-ended questions!

Open-ended questions truly keep everyone talking because "yes" or "no" answers just won't apply.

Here are some of our favorite examples:

• If you could pick a different name, what would it be and why?

• If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

• If you could pick any job, what would it be?

• What was the best thing that happened to you today?

• What was the funniest thing you saw today?

• Where should we go on our next vacation?

You get the idea!

Feel free to make up your own (or share your favorites below in the comments section). Just be prepared to answer the questions yourself, as well. Communication is a two-way street.

About Us

We teach people how to say no to drugs and how to make healthy choices. To reduce the demand for drugs, Informed Families has focused its efforts on educating and mobilizing the community, parents and young people in order to change attitudes. In this way we counteract the pressures in society that condone and promote drug and alcohol use and abuse. The organization educates thousands of families annually about how to stay drug and alcohol free through networking and a variety of programs and services .
